Attending the EMERGE show this Saturday at Otis was a great experience. It was humbling to see all that amazing talent in one space. My favorite piece was the Facebook posters, they were so witty and nicely design- it was great inspiration. I think sometimes as students, we forget that there is talent and inspiration to be found from other student work. I was also especially drawn to the editorial and publication work. I've always been partial to publication design so it was awesome to see that there were so many displayed. The quality on the them was spectacular as well as the process books. It was also great to have my work shown outside of CSUN, but it was better in that the show really motivated me to become a better designer and student.

My first idea for project 2 is to do a collection of records by Ratatat. They are an electronic band from New York. The collection will consist of 4 albums with cds resembling vinyl discs. As for the carrier or box, I'm thinking about having it look like a synthesizer or maybe a 4 track. I also want to include a guitar shaped booklet with additional stuff - bio, history, lyrics, etc. Maybe throw in stickers as well.
My other idea, which I'm more excited about, is going to be a collection of movies based off books. I want each blu-ray case to resemble a Penguin book type template. My inspirations are of course the Penguin books, Olly Moss's penguin styled game posters/covers, and M.S. Corley's Penguin inspired Harry Potter covers. I'm going to house the blu-ray cases in what would appear to be a really thick Penguin book. With this project, I might include 6 movies or so since the art will be minimalist.

Sketches coming soon.

I saw this on Tumblr today and just had to blog about it. It's similar in the retro style that I'm doing with my arrogant bastard project but I love their solution to the label. It's clean, unique, and almost looks medicinal (back label).

I went to digital with one of the concepts because the sketches weren't looking like what I had originally imagined.

The Bad:

This oj packaging just looks completely dreadful, boring, and not even generic - something worse than that.

The "plastic clam" packaging... I absolutely hate for a number of reasons. They are a pain to open and are usually accompanied with an equally terrifying design.

Completely unnecessary and bad for the environment.

Nostalgic in a bad way. Really 90's and even in the 90's I feel like this wouldn't be a successful design. Too many words on the front, inconsistent type at times (excluding the logo), and tacky to be honest.

Ugly, wrong, looks like a happy meal, etc.

The Good
Visually stimulating, exciting, fresh, really makes you want to pick it up and 50% of the time when something is picked up, it is purchased. Really cool and successful solution.

Pistachio nuts - Packaging is interactive and great for people who dont like to clean up a mess.

Really captures the essence of drinking tea - the color, floral designs, and type all bring a sense of calmness and health to the package.

I'm pretty sure this will be posted a few times, I think it's just a great, fun and unique way to package juice.

Basically the idea behind this is that the shirt is purchased online and shipped with a package that can be folded into a clothes hanger to be used with said shirt. Innovative and sustainable - the perfect packaging design!

The Negative Space Exhibit was a fun event to attend. It was a great experience to see other student's work. The exhibit consisted of motion, print, and packaging work. There were quite a few inspiring pieces in each section. My favorite piece was the dvd packaging for the 3 bands. It was put together really nicely, definitely a unique piece in the show. I also enjoyed the MTV bumper, I thought that was really fun and definitely something I could see right now on MTV. It was a breath of fresh air to see all the different styles and approaches to the projects.

I'm going to be doing a Quentin Tarantino film festival. My three posters will feature the films Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds. I'm going for a slight minimalist look... similar to the television posters designed by Albert Exergian (I'll be adding more elements though). Here are some examples of this:

For Pulp Fiction I want to reference the scene when Mia tells Vincent to not be a...

For Kill Bill I want to reference the scene where beatrix kiddo is in the PussyWagon, unable to move her legs, she tells herself to wiggle her big toe.

And lastly, with Inglourious Basterds the poster will feature the last scene of the movie.

I don't know if the GIF animation is going to load or not but if it does... it is a bit gorey so just skip it if you don't want to see a swastika carved into someone's head.

I might have quotes attached with each movie poster if the imagery is too obscure. for instance Pulp Fiction - " Don't be a..." Kill Bill - "Wiggle your big toe" Inglourious Basterds - "This just might be my masterpiece".
